Building permits in Summerside, P.E.I., are up by 99 per cent compared to the same period last year, according to city officials.

The business and residential building permit numbers include June 2014.

“We have had a couple of really big individual permits and I see that this month there are a couple more, which really gives us a boost,” said Nancy Quinn, economic development officer for the city.

“There was a public announcement by Walmart Canada that they're doing a big renovation in their store here in Summerside. So that permit came through in June and it's quite significant.”

Quinn says P.E.I. Mutual is starting new construction on Walker Avenue, a “significant new piece as well.”

She says last year at this time, building permits in the city totalled just under $8 million. So far this year it's been $15.9 million.
