Street patio expansion proposed for Charlottetown
Restaurants across a wider area of downtown Charlottetown may soon be allowed to set up patios in the street outside their dining rooms.
Currently only businesses on Queen Street, south of Grafton, are allowed to operate outdoor patios on the street during the summer months. Proposed amendments to the Street Vendors Bylaw would expand that area to include sections of Pownal, Fitzroy and Hillsborough streets.
Coun. Rob Lantz said business owners in those areas have been pushing for the change.
"There will be a bit of controversy because it will take some parking spaces away at this time of the year in the summer," said Lantz.
"There's pros and cons, but council has shown a willingness to consider expanding the area where these are allowed and I think it's worth considering."
Lantz said the plan is in the preliminary stages and it will be reviewed again by the city council before any final decisions are made.
