Some businesses in rural P.E.I. are concerned about upcoming changes to mail service. Right now, mail sent within the Island is sorted in Charlottetown, but in April, Canada Post will move mail sorting to a facility in Halifax.

Florence Sutherland depends on Canada Post to send invoices to customers across Kings County. She is worried about changes being brought in by Canada Post.

Many times, the mail she sends get to its destination in just one day, which is perfect for making tight deadlines.

"Customers like to get their payments in before the end of the month so there aren't any service charges added on."

Canada Post said the change shouldn't change their two-day service standard.

"The move to sort local mail to Halifax is really about creating efficiencies within our network, so we don't become a burden on taxpayers," said Anick Losier, Canada Post spokeswoman.

But Sutherland isn't convinced mail will get where it needs to go on time.

"Almost all of our business is in a very small radius around Montague. And sending it to Halifax just doesn't seem to make any sense," she said.

Business owner Gary Hughes said rural service is continually being reduced.

"I guess they have to watch the bottom line too. Of course they're like a lot of agencies that are pretty top heavy at the end. Big wages, so the little guys get cut again. That's usually the way," he said.

Canada Post said no jobs will be cut on P.E.I. Employees will be reassigned to other duties.
