Heavy rain and snow thaw has caused a number of roads to be closed. (CBC)The P.E.I. Department of Transportation is still dealing with closures of several roads that were washed out due to heavy rains and a rapid spring thaw over the past couple of days.
"We still have a lot of ditches and culverts that are filled with snow and ice so we're just basically reacting to the areas that are getting hit," said Darren Chaisson, director of highway maintenance.
Detours are in place on the following roads:
- County Line Road, Route 232 between Emerald & Shamrock
- Route 6, Cavendish Road, from Rustico to Route 13 in Cavendish
- Route 6, Portage Road, from Route 15, Brackley Pt Road, to Route 223, Winsloe Road
- Tobin Road, between Route 1 and Route 10 in Tryon
- Simpson Mill Road in Stanley Bridge is down to one lane of traffic
- Route 225 in St. Ann is down to one lane of traffic.
The transportation department hopes the roads will be repaired and open by the end of today, but the damage in Stanley Bridge could take longer to fix, said Chaisson.
"The inlet has eroded away. We'll be out this morning to do some assessments, but that might be … a week or so. We're not exactly sure. We'll know more this morning as to what we're going to be doing there," said Chaisson.
The transportation department is also warning people that unpaved roads across the province are extremely soft. Motorists are advised to stay off them wherever possible.
