Charlottetown is jumping the queue to host East Coast Music Week a year early in 2014 so it can be part of the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference.

The Charlottetown Conference in 1864 marked the beginning of the process that would lead to Confederation in 1867. The city is marking the anniversary with a series of events.

2014 was supposed to be Newfoundland's turn for the East Coast Music Week, but Charlottetown was able to negotiate an early return of the event to the city.

"I certainly think that Charlottetown is going to be a hotbed of activity," said association executive director Scott Burke.

"So we talked to our friends in Newfoundland, and they said 'OK, we can wait one more year,'"

Charlottetown's argument was made stronger by the promise of the millions of dollars in provincial and possibly federal money that is attached to the year of celebrations. 2014 executive director Penny Walsh McGuire said East Coast Music Week will be one of the 2014 celebration's Signature Events.

"We'll work with the organizers to find some additional surprises during the week," said Walsh.

The 2014 East Coast Music Week will run April 2 to 6.
