Holland College cuts multimedia program

An independent review of Holland College's media studies department has recommended the interactive multimedia program be eliminated.

The study was prompted by a decline in applications and enrolments in some media studies programs. It makes several recommendations for change, including the permanent elimination of the interactive multimedia program.
"When we had first suspended interactive multimedia this study recommended that it be permanently suspended or terminated," said Dave Beaton, director of programs for Holland College.
"There were other programs where the numbers suggested that we increase. So our fundamental art program, it was suggested that we take our student enrollments from 12 where they currently are per year up to 16 because they see a strength and growth in the applications and demand for that program."
The study recommends graphic design students get more web design training, and that journalism students receive more instruction in social media. Beaton said some programs, such as video gaming art and animation, are on target and no changes are needed.
The ultimate goal, said Beaton, is to ensure students have the training they need to meet industry demands.
