The City of Charlottetown is considering the idea of a national folk music festival, but the proposed venue is raising questions.
Some residents and city council members say people shouldn't be charged to use Victoria Park for the concert. (Google Street View)Organizer Rob Oakie hopes the three-day event will attract world-class acoustic musicians.
He sees Victoria Park as the perfect venue.
"There is really no other venue in Charlottetown that's suited for folk festivals with multiple stages. And really, the setting is everything in a festival along with the music," said Oakie.
The cost of the concert will depend on what's available through public and private funding, but he said it could attract up to 10,000 paying customers.
And that's raising some eyebrows among locals and city staff.
"We obviously need to look to our fire department and our police department and look at safety codes and that type of thing," said Mayor Clifford Lee.
City resident John Morris said a large-scale event should take place at Charlottetown's new event grounds.
"I'm sold on the festival. I'm sold on any festival. But the fact we're here, six months after the opening of our events grounds represents something," said Morris.
Some question why the new event grounds on the corner of Grafton and Water Streets couldn't host the concert.Others don't believe they should be charged to use the popular public park.
Only parts of the park will be gated and any damage would be repaired, said Oakie
It's now up to the city's parks and recreation department to determine if the concert complies with bylaws. They will then issue their recommendation either for or against the concert taking place in Victoria Park.
