A Charlottetown honey manufacturing business is developing new products in part because of a move to a new facility, says the company's president.

Since Island Abbey Foods got its big break on the CBC show Dragon's Den a few years ago, its honey products have gone as far as space — literally. (The company's flagship product Honibe Honey Drop was selected to be one of 150 innovative Canadian food products to go to the International Space Station.)

Now, the company is working on solid maple and agave products. Agave comes from a Mexican plant and is a sugar substitute.

President John Rowe credits the company's move into a bigger facility last summer for the latest innovations. The move allowed for added space and new packaging and processing equipment.

"So, we have been slowly but surely expanding what we have been able to make. So, we are going to be introducing more and more new products as we add this equipment over time," said Rowe.

The move into the research park also allowed for the launch this week of a new Honibe sucker.

The big selling point for this product is that it's pure honey. Other brands say there is honey in their product, but have, at the most, five per cent of the natural product, said Rowe.

The suckers will sell for $1 and will soon be on store shelves.
