Humane Society International/Canada has increased the reward it's offering for information on the seal killings which took place in eastern P.E.I. last week. Originally the reward was $1,000. It's now $5,000.

Necropsy results on 10 of about 50 dead seals found on the shore near Beach Point show they were bludgeoned to death.

It was not sealing season, and the results showed some of the seals were not killed instantly and were left to die in the cold. Officials from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans are investigating.

HSI Canada says it has received calls from Islanders and people across Canada asking if they can contribute to the reward pool.

"The contributions have really ranged from, you know, just $50 up to even $2,000 in one case," said Rebecca Aldworth, executive director for the group.

"This has been a really nice thing to see. People obviously care very, very much about bringing the people responsible to justice and preserving P.E.I.'s international reputation."

Aldworth said HSI isn't making money from the incident. All the money donated has been added to the reward, and if more money comes in, the reward will increase even further.

So far, she said, one tip has been called in to the group. Aldworth will only say it was "useful information," and it's been forwarded to the RCMP.
