Deputy mayor Corey Frizzell told CBC News last month the bus system will be up for review in this year's town budget talks. Frizzell and Mayor Barney Fullerton have both publicly questioned if transit is a good use of tax dollars.

Amanda Kirby told council transit is a key service in the town.

"I was quite disturbed to hear interviews suggesting that transit is on the chopping block," Kirby said.

"When we moved here just over four years ago that was one of the things that attracted us to the community."

Cornwall pays $70,000 a year for public transit.

Through the fall and early part of the year ridership on the system appeared to be leveling off or falling. On average the service had about 70 fares per day in 2011, and that fell to about 66 per day last year.

The most recent statistics were more encouraging. The 60 fares per day in December were the best for that month since the service started in 2008.

Cornwall is expected to introduce its annual budget next month.
