Fees at the port of Summerside are going up six per cent as of April 1.

David Bellefontaine, the port's acting manager, said gradual increases have been needed to cover some of the losses incurred since the port corporation took over ownership from Transport Canada a few years ago.

"When we inherited the port, or took it over from Transport Canada there was a significant loss on an annual basis and we are still in that position," said Bellefontaine.

"I think we've cut the losses substantially, but there is still an operating loss."

Bellefontaine said the port is not just looking to fees to help it break even. It is also making plans to raise more revenue from real estate operations.

"The plan is that we will be at least break even in the next few years," he said.

The six per cent increase in fees will amount to about $12,000 a year for the port. That money will go towards maintenance and operation.

"Even with the increase the Summerside port is still very competitive when compared to others in the region," said Bellefontaine.

There are 25 to 30 vessels that are regular users of the Summerside port.
