Support for Island businesses made for a good year of job creation on P.E.I., says Innovation Minster Allen Roach.
Roach was responding to job numbers released by Statistics Canada on Friday. The monthly Labour Force Survey showed a record number of jobs on the Island in December at 74,400.
"The government believes this is due mainly to our support of local businesses, which gives them the opportunity to increase their employee numbers," said Roach.
The job market, which had been mostly flat through the first three quarters of the year, showed significant and steady growth in the last three months of the year. The unemployment rate fell from 11.7 per cent in November to 11.0 per cent in January, despite a steady growth in the workforce.
Most of the gains, particularly in the last few months, have been in part-time employment. The seasonally-adjusted numbers show a yearly low of 11,800 part-time in September, but a rebound to a high of 13,700 in December.
Since January, there are 400 more full-time jobs on the Island and 1,600 more part-time jobs.
