P.E.I.'s hockey community is mourning the loss of Drew Power, who died in a house fire in Charlottetown on Sunday.

Firefighters found the 31-year-old inside the Kent Street house and moved him outside, but they were unable to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Power is best-known for his time playing with the Junior A Abbies and the UPEI Panthers. At the time of his death he was the assistant coach of the Holland College Junior Hurricanes men's hockey team.

Gordie Whitlock, a former coach of the Charlottetown Abbies who also coached Power when he played with the Panthers, said Power had a longstanding love of hockey. "Hockey was everything to him. I looked at a picture on facebook of Drew. He was probably 7 or 8 with his dad and he had the Junior Abbies sweater on at that time, so he certainly had a love of the game," said Whitlock.

"[He] put a lot of time into it, and it was really great to see that he put some time back into the coaching aspect of it as well. And to have the life taken away from him, it's very tragic."

An autopsy was conducted Monday morning. The preliminary results indicate Power died of smoke inhalation.

Power was a graduate of the Atlantic Police Academy, and had worked the last two summers with the Charlottetown police.

Officials are still looking into the cause of the fire. They say it started in the kitchen, and there is heat and smoke damage throughout the house.
