The Basin Head Fisheries Museum currently shares space with a popular beach. (Government of Canada)The Basin Head Fisheries Museum, part of the P.E.I. Museum, may be moved down the road to Souris.
The museum currently shares space with a popular provincial park and beach at the eastern end of the Island. Tourism Minister Rob Henderson said his department is still trying to decide if the museum is still the best fit for Basin Head.
"Obviously Souris is more of an active fishing community, it's got more year-round access, it's got an active population that is coming and going through the Magdalen Islands," said Henderson.
"I think there would certainly be some attributes I would say that would make that a proper location, but all of those discussions would have to unfold within our department."
About 20,000 people visit Basin Head every year, but only about 7,000 drop by the museum.
It is still too early to say where the museum might go, when the move might take place.
