The out-migration of people leaving P.E.I. for jobs out west has meant a dramatic increase in owners surrendering pets, say P.E.I. Humane Society officials.

"This year alone there were 100 animals brought to the shelter because their owners were moving away, said executive director Kelly Mullaly.

"When people have to move, animals are often the ones that don't get to move with them. People are definitely leaving P.E.I. altogether and they are telling us they are moving out west," said Mullaly.

"We have two cats that are in our care right now that have been surrendered to us twice because each adopted family has moved out west."

Mullaly said people really need to think about what their future work plans may be before deciding to adopt a pet.

The shelter is holding an open house this Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for people looking to adopt.
