All the kindergarten teachers who needed to get their Bachelors of Education following P.E.I.'s move of kindergarten into the school system are on track to graduate before the 2016 deadline, say education officials.
When kindergarten moved from private day care centres in 2010, 85 of the 114 teachers hired did not have a Bachelor of Education degree. The province gave them several years to get that, and UPEI developed an education degree with a specialization in kindergarten.
Sheila Barnes, kindergarten specialist for the Department of Education, said the department has been tracking the progress of those 85 teachers.
"They have to send in proof to our registrar at the end of June of every school year that they are working towards completion of their BEd, so within three years they will have their Bachelor of Education," said Barnes.
"Some of them have even accelerated it so that they are finishing much more quickly and may even finish this upcoming summer."
Barnes says it's difficult to work full-time and take classes on nights, weekends and through the summer, and the fact that all the teachers are meeting that challenge is a testament to their dedication.
