Canadian Blood Services says it has seen an increase in blood donations, because of its new Atlantic pilot project.

The program, called the Holiday Miracle Campaign, allows donors to give blood in someone's name.

A Christmas card is sent to that person. The card includes a link to the Canadian Blood Services website, where the recipient can see the donor's picture along with a holiday message.

The project began two weeks ago. Paul Doucette, a spokesperson for Canadian Blood Services, said the program is off to a great start.

"We've seen an incredible jump on our four provincial Facebook pages of people, not only those who are participating, but those who have become aware of the program and who are going to visit the sites to see all the wonderful dedications," said Doucette.

"There's always a need for more supplies, and the holiday season is one of those times where we do struggle a bit because people are out of the normal schedule, normal donors have commitments and they're travelling."
