The Summerside Salvation Army expects to see a record number of families in need of Christmas hampers this year.
Marj Montgomery is the community and family services coordinator with the Salvation Army in the western P.E.I. city. She said there were 600 hampers given out last year, and based on what she's seen so far there will be more this year.
"It has just increased beyond what we expected. Before you might see one or two extra clients a week. We're now seeing one and two people a day extra that we haven't seen before," said Montgomery.
"The soup kitchen has increased. We were doing somewhere between 40 and 50 clients a day. Now we're doing 73 a day. Where's it going to end? And how can the people that are helping support us, keep supporting us, with those kinds of numbers?"
Applications for Christmas hampers in Summerside will be taken until Nov. 30. Food and clothing donations can be dropped off at the Salvation Army, 374 Pope Rd.
