Officials with Scouts Canada on P.E.I. want to see an increased police presence around one of their camps that has being repeatedly vandalized over the last several months.
Darlene Maund caught some people at the Riverdale Scout camp setting up DJ equipment for a party. (Lindsay Carroll/CBC)Camp Riverdale near Strathgartney, west of Charlottetown, has had thousands of dollars worth of damage due to vandalism, and has been forced to close its dining hall.
The most recent incident occurred two weeks ago, when several people were found setting up DJ equipment in an empty building for a party that night. Darlene Maund, the administrative assistant for Scouts Canada on P.E.I., caught the intruders and called the RCMP.
"We've had this dining hall broken into several times, found some beer bottles there. They busted most of the windows out of the dining hall. They set of the fire extinguisher which caused quite a mess in there," said Maund.
There has been about $10,000 in damages at the camp in recent months. (Scouts Canada)"It's very disheartening because we are a non-profit organization and we don't have the money to keep repairing things or cleaning up after the damage that they've done and the mess that they've made, so it's heart breaking."
All of the camp's picnic tables have been stolen and the tractor has been vandalized. The total cost of damages is about $10,000. The board is meeting to discuss whether to ask police to lay charges in the most recent incident.
RCMP were unable to comment at this time.
