None of the local publishers are hiring right now, so I'm expanding my search outwards to neighbouring provinces.
This doesn’t mean that I'm planning on moving - anything but. The Island is my home, and I want to stay here if at all possible. If an out-of-province publisher hires me, I'll be able to stay on the Island and keep in contact with them via the Internet, but more on that later.
I'm slightly disappointed that I wasn't able to get a job at one of the Island publishers, but P.E.I. is a small province and so our publishing industry is also small. Because it's my decision to stay and try and find work here, I have to accept that some job opportunities are going to be limited.
Thanks to the power of the internet, working with non-Island publishers is much easier and cheaper to do by email than it would be by traditional mail. For example, if I were to get hired by a publisher in Ontario, they would send me the manuscript as an email attachment. Upon receiving the manuscript, I would print it off, edit it, scan it back onto my computer, and send it back to them in another email. No postage cost to deal with (although this is balanced out by printer ink costs), and the publisher receives my work much more quickly than if I had used traditional mail.
Actually, job hunting in general has been made easier now that many companies are online. Yes, print ads are still present in The Guardian, but I've found that most job postings seem to only be available online, and there’s certainly no shortage of places to post online ads at. But even with all the advantages online job searching brings, it can still be a slow and often disappointing process trying to find a job.
