Charlottetown area MLA Doug Currie is calling for the relocation of the Irving Oil propane storage facility on Allen Street.
Currie represents the area, and is also health minister. He said he's heard from many concerned constituents who want to see the facility moved. Those concerns have grown, he said, since a faulty hose spilled 32,000 litres of propane last month.
Currie said he's working with city councillor Mitchell Tweel, who has wanted the Irving facility moved for years.
"It was located there approximately 40 years ago, and at that time the area was lightly populated," said Currie.
"Today in the 10 block radius I think there's close to three, possibly four, public schools. Obviously there's a large number of my constituents concerned about the potential risk. I'm getting phone calls at home. I think it's time to start having some really formal conversations around a redeployment of the facility."
Currie plans to meet with the city and Irving later this week to discuss options about where the facility could be relocated, away from a residential neighbourhood.
