Federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May is speaking out in support of P.E.I.'s incoming Green Party leader who was served trespassing papers during a protest Tuesday.

Peter Bevan-Baker was protesting the controversial realignment of the Trans-Canada Highway between New Haven and Bonshaw, P.E.I. at the time.

The project, which received environmental approval early last week, would require clear cutting a number of hemlock trees and runs through four watercourses in the central part of the province.

Proponents for the project argue the realignment is necessary to make the winding, dangerous stretch of highway safer for motorists.

In a release Wednesday, May publically stated her support for the protesters.

“This project cannot be justified for safety reasons and will destroy not only some precious, unique habitat, but the trust and respect of many Islanders and their faith in our democratic institutions,” said May.

“Peter’s fight against this unnecessary highway realignment is a brave one," added May.

"He was on public land. There is a constitutional right to assemble peacefully. These trespassing charges are unreasonable and I demand they be dropped immediately by the RCMP.”

Darcie Lanthier, the interim leader of the P.E.I. Green Party, was also taking part in the protest. She was carried off the construction site and faces charges of mischief and resisting arrest.

Baker-Bevan will appear in court in December to face trespassing charges.

He will be acclaimed Green Party of P.E.I. Leader in November.
