Cardigan MP Lawrence MacAulay. (CBC)The MP for Cardigan, P.E.I. says the recent reversal of changes to employment insurance are a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done.
Lawrence MacAulay says the old system should be available to everyone and it should kick in right away.
On Friday the federal government announced a temporary option for some EI claimants.The old system clawed back claims once the part-time wages exceeded 40 per cent of benefits, or $75 a week.
The new pilot program reduced the clawback on new earnings to 50 per cent, but it kicked in with the first dollar earned.
That meant claimants who found only a little part-time work were penalized by the new system, while those who worked longer hours at higher pay could keep more of their earnings.
Now people who were on claim between Aug. 7, 2011 to Aug. 5, 2012 can opt back into the old rules. Those changes will take effect at the beginning of 2013.
