Every province and territory in Canada except Prince Edward Island and the Northwest Territories were awarded a Prime Minister's Award of Teaching Excellence this year.

Sixty-two teachers across the country were recognized with certificates of achievement. The award recognizes innovative use of technology in the classroom.

"We are a small jurisdiction and it's hard to be able to take part in every competition that's going on," said Gilles Arsenault, the president of the P.E.I. Teachers Federation. "This award is quite a lengthy process to go through. I presume it's just an unusual year because our teachers are way up there with the rest of the teachers in the country.

The last time P.E.I. won a national award was in 2009 when two Island teachers won awards.

While elementary and secondary school teachers on P.E.I. didn't win any awards, an award of excellence did go to a day care operator. Elizabeth Jeffery is the owner of the Little Wonders Child Care Centre in Charlottetown.

"Elizabeth's a natural leader, and she gives 110 per cent to everything she does," said Becky Pineau, one of Jeffery's co-workers at Little Wonders. "Despite all the changes that have gone through early child care in the last couple of years she's been so positive with everything and so encouraging so therefore we've been positive and encouraging. She just makes you want to do fabulous at your job."

Elizabeth Jeffery will receive her award in Ottawa on Friday on World Teachers' Day.
