A 20 year old Charlottetown man has lost an appeal of his jail sentence for a hit and run conviction.
Zachary Evans-Renaud pleaded guilty in December 2011 to leaving the scene after hitting a student walking on the U.P.E.I. campus in March 2011. The victim suffered cuts and bruises to his back, legs and hips, and his head was badly cut.
In January, provincial court Judge John Douglas sentenced him to four months in jail, but Evans-Renaud argued for a shorter sentence.
Thursday, PEI's Appeal Court ruled four months is a fit sentence to act as a deterrent.
In a previous court appearance Douglas accepted the fact Evans-Renaud expressed sincere remorse and is of good character and unlikely to re-offend. But he also noted Evans-Renaud tried to avoid detection and responsibility by leaving the scene.
