The P.E.I. Advisory Council for the Status of Women is asking for suggestions on how people can avoid resorting to violence.

It's part of this year's Purple Ribbon Campaign Against Violence, called "Violence is a Choice: Choose Better."

The annual campaign raises awareness on how to prevent violence against women.

Michelle Jay, the council's program coordinator, said these suggestions are for everyone to use.

"We know we get angry and it's not a bad thing. It can be a great motivator, it can be a really rational response to some situations, but we want to not resort to violence and to actually physically hurting people," she said.

"We all have that potential to be violent — lash out verbally or physically when we're feeling angry or frustrated — but we want to be able to say, 'What other things can we do?' and violence is a choice."

The council will create a list of the top 14 ways to avoid becoming violent.

This document will be used in the Purple Ribbon Campaign and will be included in the campaign kits sent to Island schools.

The Purple Ribbon Campaign was initiated by the ACSW in 1991 to remember the 14 women who were murdered at L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989, and to raise awareness about violence against women.
