Plumbing student from Holland College. (Holland College)Holland College has had a surge in enrolment this fall, according to the school's registrar.
The reason for the increase could be partly due to the new waterfront campus in Summerside and new courses, but also because of increased demand for courses needed in the shipbuilding industry.
Last year, Nova Scotia was awarded a $25-billion contract to build 21 Canadian combat ships, though work has not yet begun.
“The welding program in Georgetown is full and in fact expanded a bit this year, the plumbing program in Georgetown is full and expanded a bit this year, as well as the steam fitting and pipe fitting program in Georgetown," said Donna Sutton, registrar for Holland College.
She says a one-year welding program in Alberton is also full.
There are about 3,000 full-time students this year at Holland College, compared to around 2,600 last year.
