A new online poll in the U.S. puts the novel Anne of Green Gables near the top of the leading "best-ever" teen books of all time.

Lucy Maud Montgomery's novel was written more than a century ago, but when thousands of young readers cast their ballots in the online National Public Radio vote, Anne finished a respectable 14 out of 100.

"A tremendous number of people voted this year — 75,000. It's a long ballot, with 235 choices on it and the audience allowed to make 10 votes each, so it's not just click and go, it takes some time," said Joe Matazzoni, senior supervisor for the Arts section of NPR's website.

"Anne was number 14 — clearly a book that lives in the heart of many of our readers."

Both the popular Harry Potter and Hunger Games series topped the list, but Anne did beat out other newer titles such as the Twilight series and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
