A Summerside man says he wants to help stop thieves on the Island from cashing in on crime so he's started a Facebook page that allows Islanders to post about their stolen property.
Darrell Warren says he's heard too many stories of people having their property stolen.
“PEI Stolen Items [the page is called] a place where if people have something stolen, they can post it up and immediately the entire community will be able to see it,” Warren said.
It's an open page for anyone to post pictures and descriptions of their stolen property.
Warren says he wants the Facebook page to help stop thieves from selling what they've stolen and hopefully help theft victims get their belongings back.
“If you run a pawn shop, you can look there and people might be able to catch stuff coming in the door,” he said.
Nick Frost, who owns a pawn shop, says he likes the idea of the Facebook page.
“We'll have a little bit of a heads up,” Frost said.
He says sometimes, despite his own screening efforts, stolen items do land in his shop.
“The police they usually confiscate it and the people get charged, and I'm out the money,” Frost said.
RCMP Sgt. Andrew Blackadar says the page is a step in the right direction, but he has some concerns.
“There are those dangers that something could be posted falsely. Somebody could not even be in control of a piece of property or not own a piece of property, post it on the website and then report the item as being stolen just to get somebody in trouble,” Blackadar said.
Warren says he doesn't think that will happen. He did say he's not responsible for the information posted on the site.
He started the group Aug. 15 and it now has more than 300 members.
