Charlottetown POP Music Festival is a year away, but several concerts will lead up to the event.A new festival is being planned to celebrate Charlottetown's local music scene.
The Charlottetown POP Music Festival won't happen until September 2013, but organizers are gearing up now in preparation. A series of concerts will be held in Charlottetown leading up to the festival.
"We're really excited to see the life that our festival takes on and we think that Charlottetown has a very unique culture and that the music scene on Prince Edward Island is very unique," said John MacPhee, one of the festival's co-founders.
"Music is everywhere. It's really hard to escape it. Let's be honest, there's not much to do in the wintertime beyond hockey and music."
The festival will also feature musicians from Canada and elsewhere, said Mike Carver, another event co-founder.
"We're going to showcase several different genres — rock, pop, and it goes on — but just wanted to bring the spotlight to Charlottetown and the amazing music that we have," Carver said.
