A barley crop fire, that broke out on a six hectare farm in Freetown, south of Kensington, has been put out.

Twenty firefighters from three departments fought the fire.

Dean Baglole owns the field and was driving the combine harvester when the fire started. Baglole said he thinks there may have been a malfunction with one of the combine's bearings and that may have sparked the fire. He had two fire extinguishers but could not put out the fire.

Baglole's son saw the blaze, called 911, and tried to help his father put it out.

Vanessa Bulman, who lives across the road from the farm, said she noticed the fire around 3:30 p.m.

Bulman said she heard crackling and thought it was rain. When she looked out her window she realized, "that's not rain."

Bulman said the flames were reaching about six feet into the air and the smoke from the fire was thick. She grabbed her two children and ran from her home.

The Kensington fire chief said his department had just returned from another grain fire in Seaview.

There were no injuries in the Freetown fire.
