P.E.I. woman to raise 10K in 3-mountain climb

Virginia Arsenault said she wants to help others dealing with kidney disease, something she is familiar with after having a kidney removed at the age of 14. (Virginia Arsenault/UPEI)A P.E.I. woman will be climbing her way to the top of, not one, but three Himalayan mountains next month to raise money for kidney research.
Virginia Arsenault, from Charlottetown, will climb Island Peak (6,189 metres), Lobuche East (6,119 metres) and Chukung Ri (5,565 metres).
Arsenault said she wants to help others dealing with kidney disease, something she is familiar with after having a kidney removed at the age of 14.
"When I was born one of my kidneys, my right one, was severely deformed. It wasn't working properly and it was failing. They decided to remove it when I was 14," she told CBC News.
"You can live a perfectly healthy, normal life with just one kidney, and I kind of want to show others that you're able to achieve your dreams regardless of what happened medically in your past. All the funds that I'll be raising will go to help patients and research on P.E.I."
It's not Arsenault's first climb. Three years ago she scaled another Himalayan mountain. In 2010 she tried to climb Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in South America, but a sudden storm forced her group to turn back.
Arsenault's trip, which will last several weeks, begins September 15. She will be joining a group of mountaineers.
Her goal is to raise $10,000 for the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
