Teri Hall says she can no longer compromise with the provincial government. (Brendan Elliot/CBC) The woman who led the charge to have a new school built in Souris has quit the construction committee.
Teri Hall said she can no longer compromise with the provincial government. The province originally promised to build a new K to 12 school. That cost turned out to be $24.8 million.
The province has since committed to a $20 million plan that would build a new kindergarten to Grade 6 school and attach it to a renovated high school.
Hall said the construction committee has already backed down from wanting a new school to renovating an existing one but she feels this plan will not meet the needs of the students. She said, "the green space, the size of the playground areas, the fact that a main street runs through the school property - was just not suitable for a 21st century K to 12 school."
Hall said the provincial government is continuing to break its commitment to Eastern P.E.I.
The Department of Education said it can't possibly meet all of the demands with a reduced budget of $20 million. It also said in the draft plan the street will only separate a parking lot from the rest of the school building, but the plan isn't finalized.
