Several small, rural communities in the Central West Prince region of the Island are considering joining together.
Residents sent a proposal to the provincial government to incorporate the area from Campbellton to Cascumpec, in between O'Leary Road and Dock Road.
The area has around 3,000 residents.
John Lane, one of the committee members behind the proposal, said it is important for the community to have a say in proposed developments within the area.
"We want to incorporate so that we have a little more say of what development happens in our area," he said.
"You hear sometimes of developments coming to the community and by the time it's approved, the community says 'Well, how come this happened? 'Well, if you're not an incorporated area you don't really have a say," Lane said, "Because they go through the provincial government for approval, and, of course, they follow the laws of the province but sometimes it's not what the community wants."
The province will hold a public meeting and may ask for a plebiscite before a decision is made.
If the incorporation is approved, Lane said a council would be elected and homeowners in the area could face new taxes.
