The McCain family is donating $3 million towards early human development research at the University of Prince Edward Island.

The donation will set up a chair in human development at the university and help fund William Montelpare's work measuring child development on the Island.

"(We're) looking at how we can enhance the opportunities for children to develop so that we establish a good strong foundation in the early years. And we know that will help them through their teen and adult life," said Montelpare.

Margaret McCain said she wished her late husband Wallace McCain was alive for Thursday's announcement.

"We invested originally in potatoes, but now I believe Wallace believed we have added an even more important investment in P.E.I. - in P.E.I. people," she said at the UPEI campus.

"The goal of this partnership is to help P.E.I. children get off to the best possible start in life so that they can reach their full potential."

Now Montelpare is reaching out to childcare centres to study where improvements can be made to give Island kids a healthy start.
