P.E.I. developer Tim Banks has come forward with a big donation for the Boys and Girls Club, and has convinced his fellow Killam Properties directors to do the same.

Banks's APM Group promised $100,000: $50,000 for the club in Summerside and $50,000 for the club in Charlottetown. In addition, each of the 10 directors of Killam Properties, including Banks, has added another $10,000 to the donation. The total donation comes to $100,000 for each club.

Banks made the announcement at a celebrity dinner and auction at Credit Union Place Monday night.

The Summerside donation will go towards a new wing on the club's building on Notre Dame Street. Boys and Girls Club executive director Adam Binkley said the donation will allow an expansion of programming.

"Right now what we do is we meet the needs of children primarily age four to 13," said Binkley.

"[With] this money we're looking at creating the Killam Properties Youth Engagement Centre in collaboration with the Rotary, and we will be offering programs for 13 and over with educational tutoring."

Fundraising for the project is far from over with this latest donation, but Banks said he will be working with Summerside Rotary Club to spearhead more fundraising.

"It could be anywhere's from 750 [thousand] to a million dollars. We won't know until we have all the programming done," he said.

"We've done a good start here in kicking it off. I've made a personal commitment in Summerside to take charge of whatever they want me to do to help them raise the funds."

The club has been trying to get the new wing built for years. The current building is full to capacity with a long waiting list. The club was turned down for a government grant for the project last year.

Construction on the new wing will begin next year.
