Part of an eastern P.E.I. community was evacuated for a short time Monday morning due to a propane leak at a gas station.
The leak was discovered at about 8:30 a.m.
"It was a fairly substantial leak," said Murray Harbour Fire Chief Stephen MacKay.
"It could have exploded. If anything had ignited it, it could have been a major explosion."
Once MacKay determined the extent of the leak he had firefighters shut down the road and they began evacuating an area within about one kilometre of the station with the assistance of the RCMP. MacKay believes 20 to 30 people were moved, most finding shelter in the local community centre.
A technician was able to stop the leak, which was from a cracked hose attached to the 4,000-litre tank. People were able to return to their homes within about a half hour.
Provincial Fire Marshal Dave Rossiter said he does not expect any charges to be laid from the incident.
