The number of full-time jobs climbed to a year-long high on P.E.I. in June, but the unemployment rate remained the same at 11.3 per cent.

Another 800 people joined the workforce in June as compared to May, keeping the unemployment rate steady.

Overall this year the number of jobs on the Island has been bouncing around at about 72,500, with about 60,000 of those being full time. Full-time jobs jumped to 60,700 in June.

UPEI economist George Jia said it is difficult to tell where the job numbers are heading.

"It's very unclear whether we're in a situation that we're actually have all these gains in full-time jobs," said Jia.

"You may ... actually have a very unstable labour market where there's a lot of transition between full-time and part-time jobs."

Jia noted the full-time job numbers also jumped in April, but those gains were lost in May.

Nationally the jobless rate fell slightly to 7.2 per cent.
