More Islanders have added their name to the provincial patient registry since changes were made in May to streamline the process, says Health PEI.

The registry, which was started in 2000, was designed to match people with family doctors as spots opened.

In May Health PEI added a toll-free number and changed the way the patient registry was administered. The extra publicity saw more Islanders using the list, said Anita MacKenzie, the registry manager.

"We were just swamped with calls," said MacKenzie.

"I think probably a lot of people knew about the patient registry, but kind of had it tucked away in the back of their minds ... We were extremely busy for May and June with people calling and adding their names."

A decade ago, the registry had about 900 patients on it. MacKenzie said there are now around 8,500 residents on the list.

In the past several people at Health PEI worked on matching patients with doctors, now one person is dedicated to that responsibility full time, she said.
