P.E.I. sees tourism stats increase

May proved to be a good summer kick-off for P.E.I.'s tourism season, according to the latest statistics for the Island.
The province's tourism numbers for May 2012 were released last week.
Golf numbers increased by twenty per cent compared to last month and campground statistics were up from last May. Air and ferry traffic increased by close to seven per cent.
However, Don Cudmore, executive director of the Tourism Industry Association of PEI., said it's still early in the season.
Already, occupancy rates have decreased by three per cent.
As the summer continues Cudmore said he'll be watching the number of hotel rooms sold on the Island.
"We'd like to see occupancy a little bit higher. The good news is the weather has co-operated and the golf courses have maintained some good percentages and the May 24th weekend was pretty good as well," said Cudmore.
The weather was really great. We had a lot of people coming over, but the occupancy is not up the way we thought it should be. I suspect a lot of people who came over that May 24th week-end were day trippers."
Cudmore said that considering the economy the latest numbers are a good report.
