More than 200 people took part in a rally in Charlottetown Thursday night to protest the province’s plans to bring in the harmonized sales tax. This was the biggest rally yet organized by opponents to the tax.

The protest began with a procession down University Avenue, ending at the Richmond side of Province House.

Participants included Conservative Leader Olive Crane, as well as representatives of the NDP, Green and Island Parties.

The Union of Public Sector Employees also brought one busload of people from the east, another from the western part of the Island.

While the Legislature is no longer in session, rally organizers passed their own motion outside on the steps, calling for a province-wide vote.

The government announced last month it would bring in the HST on April 1, 2013. The announcement sparked a flurry of opposition from people demanding a referendum on the issue.

The HST will be set at 14 per cent. That’s actually lower than the current combined tax of 15.5 percent, but it means there will be far fewer exemptions.
