Education job cuts continue in P.E.I. with the province announcing Tuesday it would cut 10 full-time positions for educational assistants and youth service workers.

Educational assistants provide personal care, medical assistance and educational help to students with special needs. Youth service workers provide counseling services.

Last month, the government announced 120 education jobs would be cut including teaching positions, school board staff and teaching support staff.

Officials with the Canadian Union of Public Employees met with Education Minister Alan McIsaac who gave them the news.

Linda Jones, the president of the CUPE Local 3260 that represents the workers, said the workers provide a valuable service.

"We do provide a vital service. And you know what goes through our minds is that we definitely want to keep the level of inclusion that we have within the schools," Jones said.

"We want to keep that as strong and, you know, as supportive as it has been in the past. And you know we hope to work together with everybody to make sure that this ultimately happens in the end."

Jones said some workers will be retiring soon so she said she's hoping the job losses can be dealt with through attrition.
