The unemployment rate on P.E.I. dropped 0.3 in April from 11.3 to 11.0 per cent.

The rate fell in spite of an increase in the number of people looking for work. Statistics Canada reported an extra 1,000 jobs in the P.E.I. economy.

The April numbers end a three-month trend of job losses, but the unemployment rate failed to break below 11 per cent. The rate fell below 11 per cent in February because of a big drop in the workforce, but otherwise has been above 11 per cent since July 2010.

Nationally, the rate fell from 7.4 to 7.3 per cent. Statistics Canada reported job gains in most provinces.
