The Town of Stratford, P.E.I. has made it easier for farmers to use guns and noisemakers against pests such as crows in their fields.

Farmers previously had to have requests to use firearms or noisemakers against pests taken to a vote of council. After a bylaw amendment Wednesday night, it just requires a call to city hall.

Stratford Mayor David Dunphy said there will be limits on the noise farmers can make in driving away pests.

"Maybe 10 o'clock at night, six in the morning, five in the morning," said Dunphy.

"It could potentially wake people up or disturb their quiet."

Stratford MLA James Aylward was at town hall for the vote, and he is concerned about the growing closeness of interactions between residential subdivisions and farmlands.

"Our subdivisions are quickly encroaching on farmland," said Aylward.

"I just have a real fear of any firearms being discharged within town limits."

But crows can take a big bite out of newly planted crops, said Coun. Emile Gallant, and farmers need to be able to act fast.

"These are things that they need to do in order to get their crops growing," said Gallant.

"We feel it's very safe what they're going to be doing. "

The bylaw amendment takes effect immediately. Stratford council has had no requests from farmers yet this year.
