The University of Prince Edward Island is not likely to drop fees for its indoor walking track, says the head of the athletics department.
Ron Annear was reacting to a suggestion by Charlottetown City Coun. Danny Redmond that all fees be waived for the track.
"I think it's a great idea. I mean, we're always talking about health and wellness and participaction, and why not have the facilities free of charge?" said Redmond.
"I mean, all we're asking, basically, is can we walk around the track. I don't see that being a big deal."
Redmond said it doesn't make sense to charge to use the track when it's free to use the indoor tracks in the Town of Stratford and the City of Summerside. He said he's heard of several Charlottetown residents who regularly go to Stratford to use that town's track.
Last month, Stratford reported more than 2,000 uses by people from outside the town.
But Annear points out the facilities in Stratford and Summerside are publicly funded facilities, while UPEI is not.
Annear said he'd consider dropping the $10.50 per month, $5.25 for seniors, if city council wants to offer the university a subsidy.
Annear said the cost is quite reasonable, and he's never heard from anyone who has complained.
