Occupational Health and Safety officials are still investigating the death of an eastern P.E.I. man after an industrial accident at a business in the north of Charlottetown Wednesday afternoon.
He was struck by a Sanitation truck in the outside yard of the business at about 2 p.m.
"The result of that accident, a 46-year-old man from P.E.I. was pronounced deceased on the scene," said Charlottetown police Sgt. Gordie McMurrer.
The man was an employee of Superior Sanitation, which was closed for the day Thursday.
Police aren't releasing the man's name. They have handed the investigation over to provincial Occupational Health and Safety investigators.
Bill Reid, director of the Occupational Health and Safety division of the Workers Compensation Board, said they're still trying to determine exactly what happened.
"As with any investigation, the reason that we're doing it is really to prevent any future accidents such as this from happening again," Reid said.
"So we are going to be looking to make sure that all reasonable precautions were taken in compliance with our Occupational Health and Safety Act."
Superior Sanitation is a waste station where materials are dumped, then sorted and prepared for transfer elsewhere.
Health and safety investigators have inspected the site and are interviewing staff and management.
Reid said it will take at least a few weeks to complete their report.
He said it's too early to tell if charges will be laid.
This fatality marks the first time since October 2008 that someone on P.E.I. has died in an industrial incident.
