Matthew Bradley was sentenced Monday in Supreme Court. (CBC)A 25-year-old Island man was sentenced Monday to three years in prison for an aggravated assault in the community of Selkirk Road last summer.
Matthew Donald Frederick Bradley drove to a man’s house in the middle of the night on June 26, broke in, and beat the man with an aluminum baseball bat, the Supreme Court heard.
The victim — the ex-boyfriend of Bradley’s sister — was hospitalized with broken bones and abdominal trauma.
He missed months of work and is still recovering from his injuries, the Charlottetown courtroom heard.
Bradley had previously pleaded guilty to the home invasion and aggravated assault.
Crown prosecutor Lisa Goulden recommended a sentence of between three and four years in a federal prison.
Misguided mistake, says defence
Defence lawyer Mitch MacLeod had asked the court to consider a sentence of less than two years in a provincial jail. He said Bradley had made a terrible mistake in a misguided attempt to stand up for his sister.
Bradley's sister and her boyfriend at the time had had a heated argument, the court was told. The sister and a friend left the Selkirk Road home and drove to Charlottetown and met up with Matthew Bradley. They told him what happened. Bradley had been drinking. That’s when he drove 45 kilometres to the victim's home and smashed his way in.
Bradley turned himself into police a few hours after the attack and has signed himself up for alcohol abuse treatment and anger management counselling, said MacLeod.
Bradley, who showed up for court flanked by two supporters, also apologized in front of Supreme Court Justice Gordon Campbell.
He said he's sorry for what he did and for everyone he hurt, especially the man he beat.
Bradley was a first time offender, with a full time job.
Bradley's supporters wept as they left court. His lawyer said they may launch an appeal.
