Zachary Evans-Renaud enters court on Jan. 20. (CBC)A 19-year-old P.E.I. man sentenced to four months for a hit-and-run has appealed his sentence.
Zachary Evans-Renaud of St. Peters pleaded guilty to driving away after hitting and injuring a young man on the UPEI campus last March. He was sentenced Friday.
Evans-Renaud's lawyer asked for a conditional sentence, while the Crown asked for jail time in the range of six months. Provincial court Judge John Douglas said jail time was needed as a denunciation of the crime. He said Evans-Renaud tried to avoid detection and responsibility by leaving the scene.
Evans-Renaud was to start serving his sentence Friday, but his appeal was granted late in the day.
The defence is arguing the judge didn't give enough consideration to letting his client serve his time in the community.
Evans-Renaud is now playing hockey for the Truro Bearcats Junior A hockey team after leaving the Quebec major junior league. He willl be able to continue to play while he waits for a court date.
