A former coach with the P.E.I. Canada Games rowing team has been sentenced to four months in jail after being convicted of taking thousands of dollars from the team.

Cindy Burton was found guilty of fraud and theft.

Supreme Court Justice Ben Taylor concluded Burton took between $8,000 and $10,000 from the team's account for her own use.

In addition to the four-month sentence handed down Monday, Burton was ordered to pay back $4,000 and will serve 18 months probation after her release from jail.

Burton is appealing her conviction.
