The 11th annual Music P.E.I. Awards Gala was held Saturday night in Charlottetown.

Hosted by comedian Jonathan Torrens, 12 awards were handed out during the three-hour show.

Singer Dan Hodgison said his group Death Valley Driver was happy to introduce the group's sound to a new audience.

"It's cool because we met a lot of these bands tonight that are playing music that is completely the opposite of what we're playing, but everybody's been really respectful of what we're doing. It's like, good music is good music, right?"

Singer-songwriter Catherine MacLellan took five of the six categories in which she was nominated, including Female Solo Recording of the Year and Video of the Year. Her latest release, SiIhouette, won Album of the Year.

"I'm getting to do what I love and living in the place I love so that means the most to me," MacLellan told the CBC's Sara Fraser.

Raccoon Bandit won Group and Rock Recordings of the Year.

Al Tuck took home the hardware for Male Solo Recording of the Year.

Tim Chaisson was named 2012's Touring Artist of the Year.

Paper Lions, who've also been touring extensively, won Entertainers of the Year.

Kinley Dowling, who plays violin with Newfoundland-based Hey Rosetta, was named Musician of the Year — an award that recognizes hard-working side players.

The Indian River Festival won Achievement in Classical Music.

The family of late fiddler Kim Vincent, who died in 2009, accepted his Lifetime Achievement Award.

Lennie Gallant took home the Rooted to the Island award, which is given to a musician who lives off-Island but still calls P.E.I. home.

Gallant now lives in Halifax, but said the Island has a special place in his heart.

"Everyone knows that there's no place in the world that means more to me than P.E.I. This is the place I talk about when I'm on tour," he said.

Gallant closed the show with his hit Peter's Dream.

He said it's his dream to move back to P.E.I. and the Island's thriving music scene someday soon.
